Description

A sun dog (also known as a parhelion) is an atmospheric optical phenomenon where two bright spots appear on either side of the sun, often forming what looks like three suns in the sky.

Why it Happens:

Sun dogs occur when sunlight passes through ice crystals in the upper atmosphere (typically in cirrus or cirrostratus clouds). These hexagonal ice crystals act like prisms, bending the light and creating bright spots at approximately 22° to the left and right of the actual sun.
